Mouthguards

The chances of getting injured during play cannot be negated for a person who indulges or takes part in contact or athletic sports and activities. One of the most vulnerable parts of the body is the teeth. In order to protect them, it is highly recommended to wear mouthguards. Mouthguards are protective devices that prevent the teeth from getting injuries, like fractures in the jaw or broken tooth. It is also used in order to avoid bruxism. Various types of mouthguards are available, such as stock mouthguards, mouth-formed mouthguards and custom-made mouthguards. Stock ones are the cheapest as they are ready-made and may not be an exact fit for your mouth, while custom-made ones are the best ones as they are tailor-made as per the shape of your mouth and offer the best protection.

Mouthguards are also known as mouth protectors, mouthpiece, night guard, gum guard, gum shield, bite splint, occlusal splint. Besides sports and bruxism, it is also used for chronic gingival disease, during bleaching of the teeth. They are removable dental appliances for both sets of teeth. There are boil and bite types that are ready-made using thermoplastic material. These can be heated in water, and when they become soft, they are moulded to fit into the individual’s mouth. This is the most popular type. The custom made ones are prepared in the lab after the dentist takes the impression. It is the most effective and comfortable. The dentist will guide you well on which one is suitable.
