Wisdom tooth extraction in Thornhill is a standard dental procedure. It usually takes place in one’s late teenage years or early twenties. If you have an impacted wisdom tooth, it can cause pain and other dental problems. This is the reason why your dentist removes them to prevent further damage.

To prepare for the procedure, you should do the following:

Getting Started

  1. Ask your dentist any concerns you have before your scheduled procedure. You may include questions about initial preparations or the expected recovery time.
  2. Wear clothes that are loose and comfortable.
  3. Be sure to follow your dentist’s instructions regarding eating and drinking before your scheduled surgery.
  4. If you are taking any medications, you should inform your healthcare provider.
  5. Before your surgery, refrain from using tobacco and drinking alcohol for at least eight hours.

What to expect during the procedure

You have to make sure that you arrive on time for your appointment. Before starting the treatment, your dentist will perform dental x-rays to check your mouth and extraction site.

Afterwards, they will do the following steps:

1. Administration of local anesthesia

The oral surgeon will inject anesthesia into the site to make your gums numb. You will not feel any pain throughout the procedure.

2. Tissue removal

They will make a slit in your gum tissue to reveal the tooth and bone.

3. Removal of the bone

If your wisdom tooth is partially covered, the dentist will use a tool to remove the bone and expose the tooth.

4. Removal of the tooth

When your tissue is already loose and sectioned, your dentist will use surgical instruments to extract your tooth.

5. Final Stitches

To close the affected area, your surgeon will add stitches to help fasten the recovery period.

Tips for Recovery after the surgery

If you are recovering from wisdom tooth surgery, the following tips will help make the process go smoothly.

  • You can expect to bleed after the procedure. Use gauze to absorb the excess blood.
  • If you experience pain, you can use painkillers prescribed by your dentist. You can also use an ice pack on your cheek to alleviate the pain.
  • As much as possible, avoid physically demanding activities.
  • Drink plenty of water and avoid caffeinated beverages and alcoholic drinks.
  • Eat only soft foods in the meantime.

After three or four days, you can fully recover by following the tips above. If you experience severe pain, visit your dentist immediately.

Be proactive about your oral health. If you are experiencing any pain or discomfort in your teeth, schedule an appointment with your Thornhill dentist!
